Kate was 'inspired' to reveal diagnosis after seeing 'great warmth and affection' Charles received from public

The Princess of Wales felt inspired to publicly share her cancer diagnosis, in part, by the overwhelmingly warm response to King Charles' announcement he too was battling cancer in February.

"The decision was hers alone and she was encouraged to make it by witnessing the public reaction to the news of the King's cancer, released by Buckingham Palaceroyal commentator Michael Cole, a former BBC royal correspondent, told MailOnline

"The King was one of very few people given a preview of the young woman, sitting alone on a bench in her Breton sweater and blue jeans, in front of daffodils in full bloom, a traditional symbol of spring and new life."

A source told The Sun King Charles sat down to lunch with his daughter-in-law a day before she shared her cancer news with the world.

Both royals announced they would undergo surgical procedures earlier this year only to discover they had cancer.

Both Charles and Kate Middleton were treated at The London Clinic at the same time in January.

Charles shared his cancer news shortly after it was discovered.

The Princess of Wales explained in her video announcement she and Prince William took some time to explain the situation to their children beforehand.

Following Kate's public announcement, Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of King Charles which read: "His Majesty is 'so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did'.

"Following their time in hospital together, His Majesty has 'remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks'.

"Both Their Majesties 'will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time'."

A source told People magazine the Princess of Wales likely found some "comfort and reassurance" in seeing the "sympathy and understanding" directed towards King Charles after he shared his cancer diagnosis.?

The pair already shared a special bond, according to royal author Sally Bedell Smith, who told People they also have much in common.?

"She's interested in artistic things and she appreciates art and culture so has an affinity with the King over that," Smith said.

"Obviously, they have this in common and can only bring them closer. It is a source of reassurance and consolation for both of them," she added.

It was thought the Princess of Wales would resume royal duties at Easter however her return to public life has been delayed while she undergoes further treatment.

King Charles continues his duties as head of state at his homes, conducting select meetings.?
