A royal expert says Kate Middleton's response to the photo editing scandal amid her cancer diagnosis "tells us a lot" about her character.

Speaking to Today Extra hosts David Campbell and Sylvia Jeffreys from London, Talk TV's Sarah Hewson praised the Princess of Wales for taking responsibility for the manipulated image.

"I think it tells us a lot about Kate and who she is that she wanted to put her hand up straight away and say, 'You know what? It was me'," Hewson said.

Hewson said that "a bit of minor photo editing" now seemed "inconsequential" amid everything the princess was dealing after revealing her cancer diagnosis.

Earlier this month, the Prince and Princess of Wales posted the first photo of Catherine since her abdominal surgery in January, which received scrutiny over editing claims.

The photo, credited as taken by Prince William, pictured Catherine with their three children George, Charlotte and Louis for Mother's Day in the UK.

"She didn't want anyone else to take the blame for this, even in that incredibly difficult situation that she found herself in," Hewson said.

"Many of us would say that those advisers should have been there, telling her, 'You can't do this'.
