I Woke Up Like This: Why Matty J is always last out the door in his family
By 9Honey|
In our 'I Woke Up Like This' series, 9Honey removes the filters from everyday life and bares all for a much-needed reality check.
Speaking to a range of people กช from faces you know to faces you will want to know กช we tear away the fa?ade of make-up and social media and bring things back to basics with realistic 'I woke up like this' selfies and morning routines.
Today, we're 'waking up' with TV personality, host and podcaster Matty J, who has recently joined forces with Swisse as the face of the new Men's Skincare Range. He's also a new dad with partner Laura Byrne, who he met on The Bachelor.
What time do you wake up?
"If I'm exercising, it's a 6am alarm. Otherwise I let [daughter] Marlie-Mae be the alarm clock, which could range anywhere from 5am-8am."
How many alarms do you set?
"I'm actually pretty good with alarms กช I usually cap them at two (the second alarm is always 10 minutes after the first). I think knowing how much sleep means to Laura, and the guilt I feel when I wake her up, makes me scramble to turn it off and scurry out of bed."
Tea or coffee?
"I question the mindset of people who say they start the morning with a cup of tea; for me it'd be like trying to hammer in a nail with a pillow.
"I need a triple shot of coffee to get the engine started in the morning, followed up with a double shot of coffee before lunch."
What do you eat for breakfast?
"I religiously have porridge กช summer, winter, Monday or Saturday. It's always a bowl of porridge with a banana, four strawberries, full cream milk and a drizzle of honey. I think if I had to choose my last meal on this earth it would be a bowl of porridge (I might up the strawberry count to six)."
TV or radio, podcast or silence?
"I always have my breakfast with the TV on in the background. Call me old-school, but I think there's nothing better than getting the news delivered with the devilishly cheekish charm of Karl Stefanovic.?He's like the banana to my morning porridge."
How long does it take you to get out the door?
"In our family I'm always the last person out the door. I'm EXTREMELY slow at getting ready, partly because I procrastinate a lot, I normally change my outfit at least once and I get stuck in a vortex on Instagram. If I had to time it, I think I'm looking at one hour minimum."
Any unusual morning rituals or habits?
"Laura thinks I'm mad for doing this, but I never run my toothbrush under water before brushing my teeth. Whenever I'm cleaning them, I can feel her judging eyes piercing the back of my head."
What's the one thing you never have time for in the morning?
"For as long as I can remember I've always had a thought in my mind that I'll spend the first 20 minutes of the morning meditating. I had this vision of being the most enlightened zenned-out person in Bondi.
"Sadly, this is always the first item to be culled of my morning routine in favour of changing nappies and cleaning the kitchen from the mess I made the night before."
What's the one thing you always do?
"If I don't give my face a quick wash with my Swisse Charcoal Face Wash I practically feel like I'm leaving the house after being at a music festival all weekend without having a shower. Then 90 per cent of the time I'm moisturising my face when I walk between my front door and the car."
