Why Queen Maxima's parents weren't allowed to attend her royal wedding

On February 2, 2002, Maxima Zorreguieta married into the Dutch royal family in a lavish royal ceremony, but something important missing on her big day: her parents.

Maxima's father Jorge Horacio Zorreguieta was a controversial figure, having served as a member of the Argentine junta of the 1970s.

Appointed the Agriculture Minister, his job itself wasn't all that scandalous, but his connections to the brutal Videla regime was cause for concern in the leadup to Maxima's royal wedding.

More than 30,000 people are believed to have disappeared under the five-year regime, with thousands of them supposedly kidnapped and murdered.

Led by former Argentine President Videla, a dictator who ruled the nation from 1976 until 1981, and with democracy only returned in 1983, the regime was brutal and bloody.

Videla stood accused of many atrocities against civilians during what has come to be known as the 'Dirty War', and Jorge Zorreguieta served as a member of his government throughout.

But Maxima's father has long claimed he had no knowledge of the disappearances and murders, insisting he was a civilian with limited knowledge of the government's dealings outside of agriculture.

The Dutch Parliament wasn't convinced, however, and carried out an inquiry into his involvement in the regime in the leadup to Maxima's marriage to Prince Willem-Alexander.

It was concluded there was no way he could have held such a high position in the government and still have zero knowledge of the Dirty War.

As such, it was decided Zorreguieta would not be allowed to attend his daughter's royal wedding in 2002, though Maxima would still be allowed to wed Willem-Alexander despite her father's background.

It was a blow for Maxima, who was likely hoping to have her father walk her down the aisle.

Though her mother, Marจชa del Cจขrmen Cerruti Carricart, would have technically been allowed at the nuptials, she chose to stay away with her husband.

Maxima's siblings and half-siblings, all children of Zorreguieta, did attend the ceremony.

On 2 February 2002, Maxima became a Princess of the Netherlands and in 2013, she and Prince Willem-Alexander acceded to the Dutch throne, becoming King and Queen.

It was another event her parents didn't witness, being that it would be inappropriate for Zorreguieta to attend a Dutch state affair.

However, Maxima's parents were fortunate enough to attend the baptisms of her three daughters, as these were considered private affairs.
