'They can access all areas': Things to know about Guide Dogs and their handlers

Veterinarian Dr Katrina Warren has shared some things people need to consider if they see a Guide Dog and their handler.

It comes after Guide Dog research found too many Aussies still don't know ?some of the rules around Guide Dog etiquette.

Just this week a Queensland hotel has come under fire after a woman with her service dog was told to leave.

"?Guide Dogs can access all areas, that's all public spaces including cafes, shops, cinemas, planes and all rideshare vehicles," 9Honey Pets expert Warren points out.

Indeed, under Queensland law, handlers and certified dogs have access rights to public places and places of accommodation, which includes hotels and motels.?

Another thing to remember, Warren points out, is to make sure to talk to the handler.

"So use your voice, not your hands and always announce yourself?," she says.

And here's another friendly reminder to not distract the Guide Gog or try to feed or pat them.

"At the end of the day Guide Dogs are highly trained by they are just dogs? doing a very important job."
