New parents living in apartment block spark heated debate with note to neighbours

By Naomi White|

Newborns may be cute, but their complete disregard for others' body clocks means they don't make for the most pleasant of neighbours.

They may be tiny, but those little lungs can sure make some noise. And for new parents living in apartment blocks or in close proximity to their neighbours, it can cause a lot of anxiety.

That's why New York couple Todd Wilson and ?Kristen Yanow took the initiative of giving theirs a peace offering when they brought their son Quint home from hospital.

Acknowledging not everyone shares their feelings about their one-month-old, they posted a note to their door, accompanied by a bucket of mini bottles of whiskey and tequila.

"We have a newborn. He is loud," the sign reads. "He's cute as f---, but very noisy. Bear with us. Thanks for your patience."

They then invited any aggrieved neighbours to "take a nip or two at your leisure?."

But while the note was made in good faith and humour, it's sparked a heated debate after Wilson uploaded it to Instagram, where it was shared to the 'What is New York' acc?ount's 1.5 million followers. Many people took issue with the fact the parents felt the need to apologise.

"I get the gesture, it's nice, but of all the noises made in NY apartments, this is the last one that needs an apology," argued one. "Parents shouldn't feel guilty about this in any way," agreed another.

"People should not feel guilty for having a baby," said a third. "Parenting a newborn is hard as f---. Give them grace. Bring them soup and chocolate. Don't bang on the door, the walls, the ceilings, or the floors. They're doing the best they can, trust me," said another.

But many disagreed, saying having a newborn in an apartment was unfair on other residents.?

?"Just because parenting is hard on them doesn't mean a baby constantly crying isn't annoying to a neighbour," said one.

"They should feel guilty for having them in apartments. Not sorry about this statement," declared another. "Why start a family a raise kids living in a apartment. Make better life choices. Just because you have kids everyone else should have to deal with it," agreed another.

While others said babies were less painful than dogs barking all days, with one joking: "the bar has been set for Pomeranian owners".

Speaking with TODAY, Wilson said the note had softened relations with his neighbours.

"We have three or four neighbors on our floor and our walls are kind of thin," he said, "I didn't want to terrify anybody."

"A couple [of] neighbours have taken a few nips and said 'Can we see Quint?'."
