Perth dog Honey breaks the record for most puppies in a litter

By Rachael Gavin|

A? Perth dog has smashed the Australian record for the biggest number of puppies born in a litter.

Honey, a three-year-old Staffy, was in labour for three days and gave birth to 22 pups in 25 hours.

The litter beats the previous national record of 19 puppies, and falls just two puppies short of the world record of 24, which is held by a Neapolitan mastiff?.

Honey's owner Jayden Cousins told 6PR's Millsy and Karl that Honey is doing well after the birth and surprisingly energetic.

Cousins, however, has had little sleep over the past four days as he helps feed the puppies with a bottle and rotate them.

Without an ultrasound, Cousins wasn't sure how many puppies Honey would have, but after she'd given birth to 11 dogs he thought she was finished.

At that point he ducked out to get some champagne to celebrate only to find another puppy had been born when he returned. Then he and his mate just had to wait until Honey was finished.

"Honey delivered naturally with me drinking champagne. What a surprise it was given I had no idea how many puppies she was expecting. There is TWINS in the litter Honey was between 67 days and 74? days pregnant and was late on delivering," Cousins posted on Facebook.

Honey's litter has two fathers, one is a Cousins' mate's Rottweiler and the other is a Staffy owned by Cousins.

"The vet was telling me you can have two fathers in ?a litter,' he clarified.

Sadly not all of the puppies made it with some arriving stillborn. Cousins declined to reveal how many had passed away?.

The majority of the litter survived and are doing well.

?As for the puppies' futures, Cousins wants them to follow in Honey's footsteps and become service dogs like their mum.
