Four tips on controlling your dog's gross habits: Advice from Dr Katrina Warren

If you have a dog you'd know sometimes they have some pretty yucky habits.

One of the most concerning thing your pooch might do is eat poo.

If this the case for your pup, Dr Katrina Warren says, "Do not despair, you are not alone."

"It's a very common problem in puppies and dogs and it's called 'coprophagia.'

As gross as this habit is, Warren says it's normal. ?

For the little pups, eating poo is part of growing up, part of their exploratory behaviours.

While most dogs grow out of this gross habit, Warren says, "Many dogs appear to love the taste of it."

?Some breeds are bigger culprits than others like Labradors, Beagles and Golden Retrievers and although it's generally harmless, there might be a medical reason behind the cause of this problem.

Fortunately for dog owners out there, Dr Warren has her four top tips that you can keep in mind if your dog has this gross habit. ?

1. ?Be diligent

Be diligent when picking up your dog's poo. If it's left around the backyard, you dog is more likely to go back for it.

2. Have a short lead

Keep your dog on a short lead at the park. This will allow you to stray your dog straight away from their business.

3. "Leave it"

Teach them a word like leave it or some word to encourage your dog not to dive right in after.

4. Block access to litter trays

If you have feline friends that accompany your pooch at home, it's important to block access to the litter tray as some dogs may head straight there. According to Warren, "lots of dogs love kitty 'delights' as well."
