Vet warns of three dog breeds notorious for health problems

Whether it's their temperament or suitability for a family with young kids, choosing the right breed is important for anyone looking to welcome a dog into their home.
Some dogs require more work than others, whether it be more exercise or even having health issues. ?
Vet Dr Sehaj Grewal has taken to TikTok to share three breeds that are notorious for having health problems potential owners should be aware of.

The first breed the vet mentions are dachshunds.?
"?Dachshunds make great pets, but they're prone to a lot of different health issues," Grewal, who goes by @themelrosevet on TikTok, says.
"The most common being intervetebral disc disease. It's a disease of the spine... which the cushions of the spine deteriorate over time and can rupture."

Up next are ?Cavalier King Charles spaniels.
"They're notorious for having a heart condition called mitral valve disease. That's the valve in the heart that starts breaking down as you get older," Grewal says.

Approximately one in 10 dogs (10 per cent) will develop some form of heart disease during their lifetime, and approximately 80 per cent of the heart disease is due to mitral valve insufficiency, according to VCA Animal Hospitals.
The third dog Grewal mentions is the pug.
?"They're brachycephalic dogs, meaning they have flat noses, flat faces and small airways," he continues.
?"They're very prone to shortness of breath and they have trouble regulating their temperature when it gets hot."

TikTok users were quick to comment on Grewal's video, ?some disagreeing with the vet's claims.
"Other than IVDD what else are dachshunds more prone to? I would not say a lot of different health issues for themกญ" one user wrote.
"We had a mini dachshund & he never had health issues & lived to be 17 yrs old," another said.
One, however, ?agreed with his points, saying, "Our Dachshund disk surgery [cost] $7,000.00."
