'Never worth the risk': Vet's warning about giving dogs classic Easter treat - and it's not chocolate
By Katrina Warren|
Many of us enjoy hot cross buns, a traditional Easter delicacy, but they should never given as a treat to our canine companions.
Hot cross buns, innocent as they may seem, often contain ingredients that can be harmful or even toxic to our precious pups.

Many contain dried grapes, such as sultanas and raisins, which may cause vomiting, diarrhoea and in some cases, severe kidney damage in dogs.
Grapes, in all forms, are considered toxic to dogs, and no amount is considered safe.
The toxic dose varies between dogs, and while some dogs have ingested large quantities with no effects, others, including large dogs, suffer kidney failure after just a few grapes or dried grapes.

There is no rule about the toxic dose, so it is never worth the risk.
Signs of toxicity include vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain within six to 12 hours of consumption.
Often followed by increased thirst, lack of energy, not eating, dehydration and failure to produce adequate urine, which can be fatal in one to three days.
If you suspect your pet has eaten grapes or hot cross buns, please call your vet immediately.
Depending on how much and long ago your pet consumed the product, your vet may recommend inducing vomiting.
They may also administer activated charcoal and your pet may require intravenous fluid to support the kidneys and maintain adequate hydration levels.

Please don't opt for the fruitless hot cross bun options:
- They may contain spices that may cause digestive upsets like vomiting and diarrhea.
- Hot cross buns' high sugar and fat content can also cause digestive issues in dogs and may contribute to weight gain.
- Some varieties contain chocolate, which is also toxic to dogs.
Remember, dogs are excellent at sniffing things out and will happily eat packaging and wrappers, so please keep the hot cross buns out of reach this Easter.
