Woman discovers she is pregnant during Brazilian wax

By Madhurima Haque|

There are a myriad of unusual ways people discover they are pregnant - but perhaps none are more intimate than right in the middle of a Brazilian wax.

Aussie woman Laura has taken to TikTok to share the story of how a beautician giving her a wax was the first to alert her to the fact she may be expecting.

In the video Laura tells how she was nervous for her first ever Brazilian wax, even though she had built up a tolerance from waxing other parts of her body. She kept saying the temperature of the wax was "excruciating" - to the point where the beautician demonstrated the low temperature of the wax by putting it on her own elbow.

"Finally she looks at me and is like, 'You're not pregnant are you?'" Laura says.

Laura vehemently denied possibility for a while, until she thought about it and realised that there was in fact a chance she might be pregnant.

"I hadn't confirmed (it) but the first person to even suspect it was the lady doing the Brazilian wax," said Laura.

In response to questions about exactly why the beautician suspected she was pregnant, Laura replied: "I was extremely sensitive to the temperature of the wax. Like to an alarming degree. Apparently that happens (with pregnancy)."

Many viewers were were shocked to hear the story, but some shared similar experiences.

"Omg what a way to find out," remarked one commenter. "I thought they were going to say you were really swollen down there," said another.

"My friend found out from her sugaring lady she was pregnant cause her colour changed down there and she was a regular," said one commenter.

"I've been getting waxed for years but immediately stopped when I fell pregnant it was sooo painful!" said another.

According to Healthline, the process of the body producing extra blood and fluids during pregnancy can lead to more sensitive skin, making waxing more painful. "What to Expect" says that this is especially true for the pelvic area, as blood flow is increased there.

It is also not recommended to wax if you have melasma - also known as "pregnancy mask" - which causes brown or grey patches to form on a pregnant woman's skin. Waxing can further irritate these spots and make it worse.

So while waxing during pregnancy is technically safe, the pain may vary on a case by case basis and other circumstances should be taken into account too.
