'Everything surprises you': Rafael Nadal speaks about life as a new father

T?he numerous Grand Slam trophies are impressive but it's his new life as a father that is keeping Rafael Nadal on his toes these days.

Speaking in a press conference ahead of Sunday night's Netflix Slam, Nadal, who is known for keeping his private life out of the spotlight, spoke about his life as a new dad.

"Everything surprises you because everything is new," he told E! News during the press conference.

Nadal and his wife ?Maria Francisca Perello married in the couples' hometown of Majorca back in 2019.

Three years later the pair welcomed their first child on October 8 2022.

Now with an almost 17-month-old, the 22-time Grand Slam winner explained that every day is a new challenge for the couple.

"Especially the first kid you have, everything is 100 percent new for my wife and for me. So you learn everyday, and every day is unexpected," he said during the press conference.

Despite the challenges, the Spanish player is "happy" and loving life as a new parent.

"I can say nothing negative," he said. "I am lucky that for the moment the baby is doing very well. We are happy."?

?Growing up family-oriented, Nadal shared that parenthood is something he has always looked forward to.

"I have always been a kids guy," he said. "I had plenty of smaller cousins than me so I had a lot of fun with them when they were babies."?

These days there are many question marks surrounding Nadal's career and potential retirement but currently the athlete seems content juggling both fatherhood and tennis.

However, when it comes to balancing his many priorities, Nadal has been open that his family and personal life come first, despite his mammoth success on the tennis court.

"The reality is simple: You can have all the titles you want, but if you don't have the capacity to be able to enjoy life with people that you love, and that love you, what does anything else matter?" he said in an interview with ?ATP Tour
