Mum fuming after school confiscates 11-year-old's drawing over 'offensive' detail

By Naomi White|

E?very parent knows the particular anxiety that comes from seeing your child's school number flash up on your phone.

The dread of being told they're in sickbay, or worse, that there's been 'an incident' only needs to happen once for you to constantly be on alert for the next call.

But few parents have likely been called up about their child's artwork.

That's the saga that's going viral on TikTok, after mum Sierra Carter, from Michigan in the US, revealed that she was called to meet with the vice principal and social worker at her daughter's school after they deemed the 11-year-old's drawing of a pig "inappropriate". And she is outraged.

The Year 5 student, Lily, was happily working away at an assigned art project, when Sierra says the teacher came over to demand to take a look.

"?The teacher told me my daughter had drawn something inappropriate in art class. A little boy came up to her and let her know my daughter had drawn 'boy parts' on her pig project. So she went over and asked for all her papers," Sierra said.

When Lily complied but shooshed her classmates when they began 'a big deal' over the drawing, Sierra said the teacher 'took this as a sign of guilt' over the drawing.

Although Lily insisted the offending detail was a bowtie, not a rude drawing, the teacher confiscated the drawing to show the vice principal, who then called her mum into the school.

After arriving for the meeting, Sierra was taken into a room with the vice principal and social worker and shown the work.

"They hand me her art project that was just 'so offensive' and as soon as I look at it I'm like 'are you fricken kidding me?' Like I literally slammed my hand down on the table and said 'To be completely frank with you, I'm p---ed. Like why are we sitting here right now, and why is there a big deal made of this?," she said.

"They told me when they gave it to the principal to ask what his thoughts were on this whole thing his first thing he said was 'Write her up'.'

Not accepting this, Sierra demanded to chat to the principal who told her bowties should be a bow shape, inferring her daughter must have intentionally been inappropriate. ?

"Me, I'm like 'I'm sorry my daughter's no Monet'. But to her a bow tie is a bow and a tie and if another kid happened to look at it and think it's something else, that sounds more like a he problem than a she problem. Why are you making this my daugther's problem?"

While Lily escaped punishment, Sierra was told the work would be put in a folder, in case of future incidents.

Many on TikTok were equally outraged by the school's reaction.

"Teacher hereกญ bow tie, but woulda [sic] had to show my fellow teachers because it's cute and funny. Nothing more," said one.

"Ugh! Some adults have zero common sense!" agreed another. "Glad you stood up for your daughter. That's 100 per cent a bow tie and she is so innocent?," argued a third.

Sierra has since met with the school superintendent, John Denney, who told local news network WLNS he was disappointed that it's been broadcast on social media.

"It's unfortunate that a one-sided narrative has been created on social media that paints our staff in a negative light," he said.
