Ridiculous reason dad insists on giving twin girls rhyming names slammed: 'Will ruin their lives'

By Naomi White|

If you found choosing one baby name hard, spare a thought for parents of multiples.

Especially when it comes to finding two names both parents can agree on, as one expectant mum has found.

Writing in to Slate's Care and Feeding, the mum shared she was expecting identical twin girls and while her and her husband were overjoyed to be welcoming two bubs, they had very different thoughts on what to name the pair.

While the mum felt they should be given different ?names to make it easier for them to form their own identities, the dad was more in favour of rhyming names.

The reason? It would make school admin easier, explaining their school district 'kept track' of students using their first initial, last name and graduating year.

"Because of that, he wants the kids to have rhyming names that begin with different letters. He's been sneaky about it too, suggesting names like Isabelle and Eleanor, before suggesting we give them the nicknames Belle and Elle," the mum shared.

Although she had tried to compromise by suggesting themed names, such as two floral names, the dad was adamant they needed to rhyme. ?And having not had friends go through similar name struggles, she turned to Slate's agony uncle Doyin Richards for advice.

"?In this case our fundamental philosophies for picking names are different and neither of us are willing to compromise," she said.

"My husband thinks it'd be cute, I have heard testimony from (perhaps overdramatic) identical twins telling me being named Anna and Hannah ruined their lives."

Richards, an identical twin himself, did not mince words about her husband's suggestion, saying it should 'be a hill you die on' and suggesting couple's therapy if needed.

"You are absolutely right when you say that those types of names only succeed in making your kids out to be a sideshow or a novelty act instead of individual children who happen to look alike," he advised.

"Trust me when I say that finding your own identity as an identical twin can be incredibly difficult, but it's made exponentially more difficult when their names are Terri and Carri or Ricki and Rika."

Continuing to say no 'rational parent' would put their children through this, he said it was 'completely ridiculous and selfish'.?

"There's not a doubt in my mind that the twins you mentioned had their lives ruined because of their similar names, and you shouldn't allow that to happen to your precious children," he said.

"There's an endless list of alternatives for names that should satisfy both of you, and you need to do whatever it takes to find them."
