Rebel Wilson hits back at mum-shaming double standards: 'Chris Hemsworth goes to the gym'

By Merryn Porter |

When Rebel Wilson announced she had become a mum last year after ?successfully keeping her surrogacy journey a secret, she was prepared for an onslaught of media attention.

But what she wasn't prepared for was the onslaught of mum-shaming that occurred when she went out and left her baby at home.

Now Wilson has talked about the attacks she suffered for going on a night out and called out the double-standards women face when they become parents during the Life Uncut podcast.

Wilson was being interviewed by Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne as part of an episode entitled, "A lot can change in 12 months จC Surrogacy and being in love with Rebel Wilson," when she touched on the double standards women face.

She said she was mum-shamed a week after announcing the birth of baby daughter Royce last November after she and partner Ramona Agruma went out and left the baby at home with a nanny.

"I think it was only a week until I got mum-shamed," she began, adding the uproar was over her decision to leave the baby at home and attend birthday parties for Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton, which were held on the same night.

"Our baby was like one week old and the nanny's like 'Go' and I was like, 'No I don't feel like going out'. But the baby goes to sleep at about 7 o'clock every night. So she's like, 'The baby is asleep, you're totally fine, just go out'."

But after Wilson posted a video of her night out on Instagram, trolls began criticising her, something she admits was 'shocking'.

?"I was shocked at the criticism because Chris Hemsworth goes to the gym and people aren't yelling, 'Where are your kids? What are you doing?' But why do they do it to every woman?" she said, adding events such as this were important for her professionally.

"Sure, going to those birthday parties is fun but it's a little bit [of] work in a way. Like I am talking to directors or talking to other actors that it might be useful to collaborate with and stuff.

"So it's kind of a little bit of work and a little bit of fun, and basically we were home by midnight, so it was all good."?

Elsewhere during the podcast, Wilson spoke about the 'mother martyr' complex, in which mothers are expected to take on the lion's share of caring for their children while men can continue to live their lives.

"I definitely ?grew up with having the mother as kind of the martyr who sacrifices her own life for the children," she said. "I saw that a lot growing ?up.

"But just because you become a mother doesn't mean you lose your identity as a person, it doesn't mean you can't go out with friends or go on a holiday. It doesn't mean you can't have a career.

"I am finding it really hard to do all my work and have the baby.

"It's hard, but it doesn't mean you give up who you are as a person. It really shouldn't mean that. And people say I'm in a privileged position, which I am, but I think it is so outdated.

"And why is it women shaming other women?"

"I worked hard to get into a position where I have a really great household and stable life to bring up the baby.

"We don't go out that much because we just want to stay home and chill, and we are so exhausted as well, but every now and then.

"We just went to Dubai with the baby because there was a free Beyonce concert so we thought why not?"

?Wilson announced the arrival of baby Royce in an Instagram post last November, telling her 11 million followers she was a "beautiful miracle".
