Aussies have loved the name Charlotte since the early '90s. Here's why parents still can't get enough of it

Plenty of names have stood the test of time, but nothing quite compares to Charlotte.?

New data about the top baby names across Australia in 2025 has Charlotte nabbing the top spot in most states, proving the timeless classic is going nowhere.?

A lovely, classic girl's name that not only lends itself to plenty of great nicknames, it's remained in the top charts for years จC but why?

Well, it turns out Aussies have loved it for the last three decades.?

"Australia was way ahead of the global curve when it comes to Charlotte," said Sophia Kihm, Editor-in-Chief at Nameberry.?

"Charlotte has ranked in the Top 100 in Australia since the early '90s, and has been a Top 10 choice since 2004."?

You could argue Prince William and Kate Middleton are behind the surge in popularity for the traditional name, but they didn't use it until 11 years later.?

The royal couple went with the name for their daughter, Princess Charlotte, over a decade ago when she was born in May 2015.?

It was the birth of the little princess over a decade ago that really sent Charlotte into the top charts.?

"Charlotte was already a beloved Aussie name when Prince William and Kate Middleton used it for their daughter in 2015, but the royal birth announcement further popularised the name," Kihm added.?

"[It] was previously the Number 1 name in 2012 and 2013, and Princess Charlotte's birth brought it back up to Number 1 in 2015, the year she was born.

"In terms of raw numbers, the most Charlottes born in Australia were born in 2015. So she definitely had an impact!"?

The name Charlotte is of French origin meaning "free man" according to Nameberry.?

It's got an elegance to it and, of course, a royal touch too.

But the name is also one that's been popular through history จC from Charlotte Bronte to Charlotte's Web and even Charlotte York in Sex and the City.?

Charlotte appeals to such a wide variety of parents because it has feminine qualities but it's also sophisticated and feels grown up too.?

It's the style of name that is traditional and classic, which never goes out of style.?

"Charlotte is a true classic จC one that feels elegant and distinctive despite its enduring popularity," Kihm said.?

"Traditional names tend to have wide appeal because they're time-honoured and proven to work for a person of any age.

"A young Charlotte could go by her sophisticated name in full, or use a nickname like the boyish Charlie or playful Lottie."
