'Let it go': Parent's 'passive aggressive' note to neighbours backfires, sparking heated exchange

By Naomi White|

Apartments may foster communal living, but that doesn't always mean there is harmony among residents.

If you're ever lived in one, you'll know even small noises travel far. Your neighbour emptying their dishwasher at 6.30am can sound like it's happening in your kitchen. Someone taking their rubbish to the bins below your bedroom window at 10pm? All part of the mix.

However, for one parent the noise when their neighbour closed their door "early in the morning and late at night" was too much, so they wrote a note to politely ask the be more considerate.

While they may have felt it a non-aggressive way to raise their issue, other neighbours were not here for it, chiming in with their own replies in defense of the door-slammer and sparking a hilarious 'thread' of letters.

The initial note started off innocuous enough, if not a little passive aggressive.

"Hey! You mind not letting your door fall behind you and slam early in the AM and late at night? It's super loud and wakes up our baby. Thanks!," the anonymous neighbour wrote.?

"Other people on this floor have said something about it too. So just thought we would let you know."

To which a fellow resident replied: "F--- those b----s and their kid. Close your door however you want."

And another: "I agree! Ain't nobody said s--- about your door closing. F-- the Karens. Let the door close however you want. Let it go!"

While a fourth didn't want to miss their chance to leave their comment.?

"Hi, I didn't want to be left out. I heard about this thread on a door. I would like to add my two cents. 1) There's a baby here??? 2) I've never heard any drama about the second floor - and I talk to everyone!," they said.

A fifth note sprung to the door-slammer's defence.

"I find the defendant not guilty. They all slam all the time."

The hilarious exchange was shared to Reddit, alongside the caption: "Apparently no one in my building cares for kids."

Commenters were completely divided, with many agreeing door slamming was a pet-peeve, while others said children were the worst noise offenders.

"I guarantee you that, the parent, while expecting that courtesy they ask for from other tenants, will absolutely not give a single f--- later on if their own neighbours ask them to keep their kid quiet or away from them," said one.

"?Parents of babies seem to think the world revolves around their kid. The world is rough and raw. I've seen notes on doors: 'Please knock quietly baby sleeping'," agreed another.

"This isn't funny. This is just sad and disappointing," said a third.

While others also found it difficult to tolerate others' noise.?

"I literally want to murder people who power slam their apartment doors. So rude and stupid. I have to wear noise canceling headphones because of it," said one.

"My buildings doors are like this as well. My next door neighbour's teenage son would leave for school at 6:24am every day. How do I know? Because he would let the full weight of the door slam shut behind him as he left! BOOM! Being jolted awake every day was making me angry," said another.

"I don't have a baby; and a door slamming would annoy me because it's such a small adjustment to not disturb others. What's the problem? I always am careful to not let my door slam," shared another.

"This makes me so thankful I don't live in an apartment anymore," commented a fourth. "Don't mess with an exhausted mum."

Others shared their own experiences of childhood.

"Growing up my parents hated noise. My dad would literally watch TV with the volume at ZERO. We had to creep up and down the wooden staircase, close microwaves and cupboards QUIETLY. My mum has even yelled at us for flipping the light switch on too "loudly and carelessly". They basically wanted children to be neither seen nor heard. I definitely have trauma," shared one.

And the final word from the parent who started the 'door thread' - defending the door itself.

"The doors in my building are really heavy and all have hinges that close them automatically. Unless you are actively stopping it from closing hard they all close pretty loudly. I think that's why it turned into a bunch of notes lol?."
