Little boy's unexpected surprise from LEGO headquarters: 'Something I won't forget'

By Georgia Weir|

A little boy with big dreams has received the sweetest surprise from LEGO's Vice President and General Manager, Christian Pau.

Mum and business leader Catherine Crump from the UK took to LinkedIn to share the story behind the sweet interaction.

"A few weeks ago, my son and I were chatting about what he might want to do when he grows up. His dream jobs were running a dog hotel and being a 'LEGO designer'," the mum explains.

"The next day he appeared with a letter, written in his 'best handwriting', asking LEGO if he could work for them. He wisely shared that he'd be available to help with designing LEGO after school, on weekends and in the holidays - and that his sister would be keen to do the same."

Crump says she told her young son to manage his expectations and that while she was sure the team would appreciate the letter, he may not receive a reply.

"We popped it in the post and, to manage expectations, I let him know that, whilst Lego would really appreciate his letter, he probably shouldn't expect a reply - he looked crestfallen."

However, over the weekend the family received an unexpected surprise parcel.

"Today, a box of LEGO and a handwritten letter turned up, from none other than the VP and General Manager of Lego UK & Ireland. There is, of course, no job (yet) but seeing my son light up with pride at the beautifully crafted letter was something I won't forget," Crump writes.

In the handwritten letter, Pau wrote, "Thank you so much for your letter. It is great to see how excited you are for LEGO building and your creations look fantastic!"

Pau said that unfortunately whilst the LEGO designers all reside in Denmark, Thomas and his family were invited to the UK headquarters for a tour and a juice, tea or coffee.

"Let us know what time works for you!" he urged.

"Thank you for showing my seven-year-old just how amazing business leaders can be, and why, even when the odds are not in your favour, it's worth trying," the proud mum responded to the heartfelt letter.

The mum's post quickly went viral with LinkedIn users praising the LEGO Vice President as well as Crump for the inspiring exchange.

"No Way!! I did the same when I was 8 or so. I, too, got a letter back from the then CEO of Lego. 14 years later, that letter is framed by my desk as a powerful reminder to just go for it! Best of luck to your son, I'm sure he'll do great!" one commenter wrote.

"As a mother, you are your children's biggest inspiration for good leadership and you also just aced it. Thanks for sharing!" another user commented.

"This letter is enough for me to forgive Lego for the many late-night injuries to my instep over the years," joked a third.
