Couple struggling to decide on a baby name hit with list of 'reserved' choices from friends

Deciding on a name for your child is one of the most important things you'll ever do as parents, so of course it's a big deal.?

But for many couples actually deciding on a name, or even a shortlist, can be weeks of back and forth with vetos and trying to convince the other why your name is a good pick.?

So it's no surprise that other people get involved in the process, but it can open up a whole lot of new issues, which one couple have found out.?

A man has taken to Reddit to explain his wife shared some baby name suggestions with friends, only to be met with messages saying some are "reserved" for their babies.?

"My wife and I have a baby boy on the way, and we've been struggling coming up with a name we both like," the post started.?

"She posted a list of names to her group of friends on snapchat joking about how different (and how short) my current baby name list was.

"She proceeds to get multiple messages from her friends telling her that they've reserved some of these names so she can't use them. These women are not pregnant, they may never have a son, and yet they're telling us what we can and can't name our child."

Unsurprisingly everyone in the comments agreed that you cannot "reserve" a name and a lot of people shared their stories of being in similar situations.?

"First come, first serve. Dibs? What are they, 12?" replied one person.?

Another wrote, "So, 2 kids may have the same name? The horror!"?

"Your wife needs better friends," offered another commenter.?

"We had one of my partners friends blow up on us for calling our first after my grandfather. Which apparently they had 'reserved' She blew my partners phone up while she was still in hospital getting over pre eclampsia. She's never set foot in our house again or been allowed to meet either of our children .apparently she's still baffled as to why," recalled another.

Turns out a lot of parents had one very strong piece of advice for this couple C or any other pregnant couples C pick the name you want, regardless of what anyone else thinks.?

"When my sister was pregnant with my eldest niece, Lily was in the line up for names, I was upset because I wanted that name for my future daughter. She ended up choosing something else anyway, but here I am 15 years later with a boy and no plans to have anymore kids. So tell your wife to ignore those friends," wrote one woman.?

Another user wrote: "This is why we didn't announce the names of our kids until they were born. Everyone thinks they're entitled to weigh in on baby names for some reason. People are far less likely to start shit when the baby is earthside. Congrats btw! We have a boy and a girl and there's nothing greater than the love you feel for your little baby."?

One person summed it up with some poignant advice for the couple.

"If you guys end up choosing one of those names and it "ruins" one of her relationships then they weren't really friends."
