Am I the only mum who doesn't shower every single day?

By Nikolina Koevska Kharoufeh |

I?'m a mum of two boys under two. I AM BUSY. Well BUSY is really an understatement.

I'm working, taking care of the kids, managing the house, trying to keep the romance up with my husband and keeping my social life (barely) afloat. Every single minute of my day is intentionally allocated to something important.

And I have to say... showering is no longer one of those 'important' things.

Yes, I am admitting that I do not shower every single day. And, I'm not the only mum that doesn't.

Prior to having kids I can say that I was a 'shower once a day' kind of woman. I never skipped a shower, except for the 12-day trip I took trekking to Base Camp Everest where there were literally no shower facilities available. It was a pretty stinky two weeks.

I can even say that once I had my first, Noah, I also managed to keep up the regular daily shower habit, no matter how exhausted I was each day. Skipping a shower seemed gross and something I would have been embarrassed to do.

But then I had my second, Leo, ?and well, my opinion on daily showers quickly changed.

I've realised there is no real need for me to shower and 'clean myself' each day.

When you're at home alone with two kids, leaving the house is so much more effort than just staying put. You are outnumbered, have multiple naps to manage and need to pack five billion things in two baby bags. It is just SO much easier to stay home.

So because I stay home so often, I'm not getting 'dirty'. Apart from wrangling my toddler at times, I didn't do anything to make me sweat. My clothes smell the same way they did at the start of the day.

I haven't been the to gym ?and I haven't managed to squeeze in a walk that day, so why would I waste time washing myself. Why? I'm not dirty. I don't need to.

When I get to the end of the day I just want to sit on the couch and watch my favourite TV show while inhaling my dinner. The last thing I want to do is lift another finger and have to drag myself into the shower. It's honestly just not something I want to do.

Now I know for some showering is relaxing and a daily event they look forward to. And while I can appreciate the relaxation element of it, sometimes I'd rather just put those 20 minutes into some extra sleep that night so I can have the energy to battle my two kids the next day.

So nowadays my new habit is to shower every second day. Not to say I don't shower on the days when I do think I need to. But it's usually every second day. And while I am a little embarrassed admitting this, it seems like I am not the only mum.

?After posting this confession on TikTok, I've received endless comments from other women who are totally fine to admit that they just don't have time for a shower.

"At the end of the day unless you're going out of the house who cares," one mum wrote on the video. Another commented, "There's no way I can shower every day, something else misses out. If I do have an after-work shower it's three minutes."

Stephanie said, "Either I'm clean, my child is clean or my house is clean, but it's never all three at the same time. Two out of three is best!"

Now ?I understand this may seem gross to some people, and perhaps unhygienic, so I asked a GP what they thought of the habit.

Dr Kavya Chaganti? says skipping a shower or two during the week won't hurt.

"While daily showering is great for routine, feeling fresh and keeping BO (body odour) under control, it's not much of a concern if you miss a day here and there!"

The GP-obstetrician says, "There is no ideal number but a few times per week should be sufficient for most people."

She even noted that overwashing can have its downsides, "particularly when using soap, which can be quite drying for the skin."

So if you're a mum like me who misses a shower or two during the week, don't fret! We're doing OK.
