We're not talking about washing your chopping board after you've used it, we certainly hope you're not forgetting that.

What we mean here is those stains and grime that seem to attach themselves to your boards, and make them look so worse for wear you want to chuck them out.?

Well, save yourself some money and hold onto your chopping boards because you can get them looking good as new with a deep clean, which Birges suggests doing every three months.

To clean a wooden board she recommends sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda over the surface, and then squeezing juice from half a lemon on top.

?"With the remaining lemon you're going to scrub with the lemon in small circular motions," she explains.

"The baking soda will help pull up any of the stains or smells locked in the board and lemon acts as a natural disinfectant."

To finish, use a hot wet towel to wipe off.

For the stained plastic board, follow the same method as the wooden chopping board above, but instead of wiping the bicarb soda and lemon juice off, leave it to sit for 10 minutes.

?Then take the board to the sink, pour white vinegar over it, scrub with steel wool or a scourer and then rinse off.

Wooden spoons?

This is another item you've probably given a wash after using, but not really thought about ?the grease and grime building up over the years.

Once again, the process is quite simple.

"All you're going to do is boil up some water, fill up a cup and leave your wooden spoon in there for a good few minutes. You're going to see all that grime and all those stains lifting out," Birges says.

After the soak, use a scourer to scrub the spoon to get that layer of muck off, and your spoon is fresh and clean again.

Can opener?

Well this is certainly one that doesn't even get a rinse or wipe after we've put our hands on it, so it's time to give it a thorough clean.

"I've got a great cleaning solution and all you need is some backing soda. Sprinkle it on ?some steel wool and give it a good scrub, it's going to come up so shiny," Birges explains.

After scrubbing, rinse off your can opener and you're done.?
