A $5.50 party buy could save your plants getting destroyed by pests

By Rachael Gavin|

There are few things more devastating to a gardener than their fruit and vegetables being eaten by pests before they've had a chance to harvest them.

While there are plenty of different pest deterrents out there, one of the most simple requires an item usually reserved for ?party favours and small gifts.

Instead of netting entire garden beds, many gardeners have had success ?using small organza bags. These are typically found in the party section at many stores including Big W where a 24 pack is $5.50 and Amazon where a 100 pack is $12.49.

For Jordan, a gardener who shares videos about her fruit and vegie growing journey on TikTok, the organza bag method has been a huge success for protecting her strawberries.

She shared a video explaining ?why she prefers this method for pest control.

"Your yearly reminder ?that if you don't want to lose your strawberries to snails and slugs but you also don't believe in murder then you can cover them in these little mesh bags...

"Nothing fancy but it'll save your strawberries from being eaten and you still don't have to kill anything. You also don't have to use a pesticide which is a major plus," she said.

All you need to do to use the bags to protect produce is pop the bag over the fruit or vegie and tighten the ribbon at the top of the bag to close it.

?Organza or other mesh bags can also be used to protect tomatoes and capsicums or any fruit or vegetable that you can fit a bag around while waiting to ripen.

These bags are also good for protecting flower heads if you have a cut flower garden and they can help save seeds by capturing seeds as they fall off the plant.

When selecting a mesh bag you just need to make sure the material is fine enough to stop pests getting in, but breathable enough for sunlight and air circulation so the plant inside doesn't rot?.
