'Tone deaf' influencer slammed for judging stranger's grocery cart

By Suzy Monzer|

An influencer by the name of @olympiaanley has sparked outrage on TikTok after the content creator made a video of herself criticising a stranger's 'unhealthy' grocery cart.

In a collective effort, many have stitched the video to explain why her video was so 'tone deaf', but one in particular stood out.

The response from @rebxtat highlighted the lack of attention Olympia paid to the fact that not everyone can afford to buy healthy food.

"Here are a list of things that I ate growing up as a poor-ish kid that I think would send dear Olympia and her lemon water into a coma," she started.

Corned beef hash, sauce sandwiches, ham, tinned all day breakfasts and a 'pot noodle butty' จC which is essentially two-minute noodles in a sandwich of buttered bread จC all made the list.

After sharing some of these "true staples of the working class"?, the TikToker then shared that sometimes she'd pick mould off bread and toast to avoid asking her parents to buy a fresh loaf.

"You can't afford food waste when you're poor, that's the rules," she said.

Olympia's original TikTok featured the influencer saying "we live in a society that has normalised and literally encourages treating the symptom and not the cause. And I wanna talk about it."

"Something which I'm quite snobby about - which I'm not proud of - are people's food shops," she continued.?

The 20-year-old recounted witnessing a woman in the supermarket ahead of her who had a trolley full of "junk food" and "medicine", which the lifestyle content creator found "paradoxical".

"Just for context, she might have been having a party - I don't know if she was gonna eat it or who the food was for - but she was loading on all this junk food right; white bread, crisps, Pot Noodle all that kind of stuff," she said.

"Again, no judgement, and I don't know her personal situation, but it really spoke to me about how we don't pay attention to what we're putting in our bodies enough and then we numb it with drugs so we can't feel what's going on inside."

Despite the original video having it's comments switched off, Reb was not afraid to share her thoughts on the clip, calling the influencer "super pretentious".

"It's super pretentious of her as well, talking sh-t about people eating bad food as she sits there swirling her little lemon water," Reb said.

"I would love to see her try to live a month on just universal credit with no help from parents, or family and friends.

"She would not make it a week?, I guarantee."

The video that amassed almost half a million views was captioned: "Have you ever had to choose between eating or heating? When was the last time you cried yourself to sleep over money worries? Have you ever tried empathy?"

Other TikTok users took to the comments to add their thoughts.

"'No judgement' proceeds to judge her out in the open???" one wrote.

"Rich ppl are just living in their own little world," another added.

A third chimed in: "We're in cozzie livs, Olympia, so sorry we can't all afford whole grain organic farmers market food."?

"Being able to worry only about your health and not prices when food shopping is a privilege unfortunately," a fourth noted.

Olympia later saw this backlash and wrote beneath Reb's video.

"I never commented on poverty, I think it's really sad there are financial barriers to nutrition," she wrote.

"This is exactly why you're being called tone deaf," Reb responded in a follow up video.

"The fact that in your life style you've looked at somebody else who could be struggling and is buying cheaper food and went 'I could never poison my body with that sh-t'," she continued.

"You are privileged to be able to eat in a way that can nourish your body."?
