Premature twins celebrating their first 'miracle' Christmas

By Ella Rayment-Ward|

It's a Christmas 'miracle'. ?

A? set of Brisbane twins are celebrating their first Santa season after battling major health issues since their premature birth.

The 10-month-old identical twin boys, Lucas and Bailey, were diagnosed in utero with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) จC a condition where they shared a placenta.

The twins were then born 13 weeks early in February at Mater Mothers' Hospital to James Edwards and his partner Casey, joining their eight children.

But after being told their chances of survival were low, the premature twins are experiencing a milestone in their life จC their first ever Christmas.

"Mater helped save our babies and we are eternally grateful to have them here with us on Christmas Day," their father Edwards says.

The optimistic update comes after what has been a "challenging" few months with health complications, according to Edwards.

To make things harder, the couple had also lost a baby before the twins.

"We lost a baby last year and Casey was just devastated and scared about losing both the boys," Edwards shares.

After their rare TTTS diagnosis at Gold Coast University Hospital, the boys were found to also have Twin Anaemia Polycythaemia Sequence (TAPS) affecting their blood flow.

"It's been a real rollercoaster, very emotional," Edwards says.

The twins were then referred to Dr Glenn Gardener, Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine at Mater Mothers' Hospitals.

After attempting a surgery to help even their blood flow, a premature delivery via caesarean was determined as "the best chance of survival for both babies."

Bailey and Lucas were delivered after an early labour, weighing in at 994 grams and 740 grams respectively with Bailey receiving an additional diagnosis of polycythaemia?.

The twins were then cared for intensively for two weeks in the Neonatal Critical Care Unit at Mater Mothers' Hospital? before Bailey was transferred closer to Gold Coast University Hospital.

"Casey drove day in and day out every day to see her boys," Edwards says.

But after leaving the Mater, Lucas was given another heartbreaking diagnosis จC this time a heart valve disease called aortic stenosis.

From there, the twin who weighed only 740 grams at birth underwent two major heart surgeries and was earlier this month put on a feeding tube to gain weight.

But things are looking up for the blended family ?as they ring in the festive season at home, with Bailey and Lucas now weighing 6.7 kilograms and 5.09 respectively.

"The boys are home and enjoying life," Edwards says, adding, "It's good to have everyone home together."
